Guidelines

Identity / Placebranding

A regional cultural centre for a global audience.

The identity was designed around the word Botín, placing the name at its center while echoing the void between the museum’s two elevated volumes. It captures the family’s central role, evokes the two spellings of ‘center’ and ‘centre’ to speak to the project’s international reach, and mirrors the architecture itself.

The branding extended across subbrands, digital, and print, everything needed to communicate this active, international cultural center.

Signage & Wayfinding

Functional and Visually Integrated

Maps

The cultural institute, designed by Renzo Piano, is comprised of two suspended volumes connected by walkways and stairs, a striking form that posed a real wayfinding challenge as visitors had to choose between the two volumes.

TYPOGRAPHY: No-nonsense letterforms echo the building's industrial character. Clean and highly legible at a distance, it ties the signage directly back to the architecture it inhabits.
FORM: The building's industrial character shaped our approach to signage detailing.
PICTOGRAMS: The custom language evolved from mirroring the curvature of the two elevated volumes.

The building’s industrial-inspired architecture shaped our response: raw materials, exposed structure, and clean geometry guided the choice of finishes and typography, so that each sign reads as part of the building rather than an addition to it.

The result is a system that is unmistakably functional, guiding visitors, while remaining visually integrated with the architecture’s industrial character.

Design Process

Impact

Centro Botín needed a brand as ambitious as its architecture and reach. That vision became a wordmark and wayfinding system, locally rooted yet globally minded, helping put Santander on the world art map.
